Benjamin Coutts shares seven quick tips about how to get more from your drum loops.

Benjamin Coutts shares seven quick tips about how to get more from your drum loops. He is an Ableton Live user, but the techniques can be used with any DAW. And his tips don’t just apply to drum loops – they can be done on any kind of loop. Enjoy!

Tip 1

Everyone loves to use loops, and I am no exception to that group. So why not try to chop up the loop and rearrange the position of each hit. This can be very useful for creating your own loops with a library drums, and can lead to very exciting things.

Tip 2

After rearranging your drum loop, start thinking about taking your chopped slices and place them into individual audio channels. This will allow you to add effects to your different drum parts without affecting the other drum hits.

The problem with drum loops is that if you want to add an effect to, say the snare, you will also be affecting the kick, hi?hats and what ever else is in the loop, and this can cause problems with your sound overall.

Tip 3

Instead of loading your audio channels with a host of different effects, try to put all your effects into the return channels. The really handy thing about this is that you will be saving a lot of CPU, which allows you to add more effects to certain instruments you are using.

I love how Sony pretty much ignores the rest of the world, and does whatever they want. Take memory cards for example. Rather than use the industry standard compact flash or SD cards, Sony creates a new format in the memory stick. No one but Sony uses it, and they continue to use the memory stick to this day. …

By Alyssa Davis

Do you love music? Regardless of how you are involved in music, consider dedicating one room in your home, as a music room. Such a room could be an unused room in your home, or you could even construct a new one. In either case, the room will be 100% dedicated to music. In your music room, you could write music, practice it, or just listen to it. Here are some steps to help you design your music room:

1. Remember to add the proper lighting

If you want to use your music room for relaxation music, classical music, etc., then make sure that the lighting in your music room is soft. However, you should consider red lighting if you are in a rock band. Red is a color of aggression, so such lighting would match well with the nature of band.

2. Add lamps and plants

Such items will help the room to appear lighter. If you want to adhere truly to a music motif, then search for musical lampshades, such as those with music notes on them. Choose plants with bright flowers, to enhance further the artistic environment of the music room. However, make sure the lampshades and vases are clear of any mobile parts of musical instruments.

3. Add music decor

This could include items such as music metal wall art. Such art is available in a variety of forms, such as treble clefs, bass clefs, musical notes, and so on. Another option is to include musical posters, such as those of singers, bands, and concerts. The decor will add to the musical motif of the room.

4. Ensure that the music room has a window

This is important, to allow visual stimulation to complement the sweet sounds of music. Make sure that the window has a relaxing view, such as that of a garden, skyline, or beach.

5. Position furniture based on your use of the room

If you are using the music room for band practice, then place all huge equipment on the perimeter of the room, so you can practice in the center of it. Meanwhile, if you want to use the room to chill out and play your guitar or kazoo, then position a chair near the window.

6. Add your own flavor to the walls

Besides music metal wall art, add various types of personal music items to the wall. That could include album covers and guitars.

7. Include furniture that will help visitors to relax in your music room

One of the most important uses of music is to calm our minds and bodies. Create an aura of relaxation by adding furniture that will encourage such an environment. That could include chairs, couches, and tables. Whether your visitors are there for a jam session or to listen to a CD, make the seating as comfy as possible!

Making your own music room can be as easy as hanging home wall decor. Follow the aforementioned tips to make it music to your ears (and eyes)!

By Jason Bacot Back in the day, going into your favorite music store and dropping twenty bucks for a music CD was commonplace.

By Jason Bacot

Back in the day, going into your favorite music store and dropping twenty bucks for a music CD was commonplace. Now, with free music downloads, mp3 downloads and digital music, there is literally no reason to buy hard copies of music anymore. Why would you feel the need? You can download music for free all day long online, and then transfer it to your iPod or other mp3 player. Here are several reasons why digital music has eliminated the music store with most people:

Cost – With free music downloads available all over the place, spending the money for a CD just makes no sense any longer. Once you have a digital copy, it is easy enough to listen to in any situation that, paying for music is largely outdated. Even when you do spend the money on digital copies such as iTunes or the like, the cost is still a fraction of what it costs to buy multiple CDs to get your favorites.

Convenience – How can you possibly compete with an mp3 player or digital options? You can carry literally thousands of songs on a little device as big as your hand, or you can carry along hundreds or thousands of CDs that have a ton of music you would never normally listen to anyway. Most CDs have one or two songs you want them for, and the rest are wasted space. Digital allows you to have what you want when you want it.

Flexibility – Digital music acquired from free music downloads can easily be converted into whatever format that you need. With CDs, you have to literally have a CD player available to listen. We all know the difficulties involved with trying to do that while jogging or in a car. No such worries exist with free music downloads of digital music. There is no skipping or jumping, and it goes with you anywhere that you want.

Instant Gratification – A music download is instant for the most part, whereas finding your favorite CD might take weeks, months or even years. Once a song is digitally offered, it can be found in literally thousands if not millions of places. You can be listening in minutes and never have to leave your computer desk.

Only Get The Songs You Want – Without a doubt, this is one of the best reasons to use digital music and mp3 downloads. Back in the day, we would spend hours and days putting together mixed tapes that only had the best of our tapes and CDs. Now that can be done in minutes via the Internet, iTunes and an iPod. There is no real competition here.

The days of going into the music stores and buying CDs are pretty much long gone. They are still offered, but how long before they go the way of the cassette tapes and eight tracks? It can not be too long, and digital music is going to lead the way into the next musical century. What is next to come can not be predicted, but it is easy to see where we are today – music on our hip is here to stay!

Even though some mainstream artists have recently decided to release their music on LP’s, I’m guessing for nostalgia reasons only, they still know that the digital format is what people really want. A few years ago digital music saw a boost in popularity because of services like Napster. Today, the list of digital music sites is growing, and for good reason. Everybody has a digital music player, also known as an mp3 player. Compact discs are still popular because people like the idea of having something tangible in their hands, probably for the same reasons that we don’t yet live in a paperless society. However, music downloads are quickly becoming the popular medium for obtaining music. The process is fast, as in instant. If you pay a fee for it, it’s legal, and the best part is, its digital. You get a high sound quality in a small sized file because of the recording format. Although people like sound engineers may or may not be able to tell a difference between an mp3 and a CD file, the average person will never hear the difference.

Sites like MySpace and companies like Apple with iTunes have given bands that might not ever see their music encased in a CD wrapper the chance to showcase their talent via the Internet. Just about every band you can think of has a MySpace page, and if they don’t, they could be slightly missing out on the power of the web 2.0 era. The Internet can reach far more people than a tank of gas and a dream. Its smart marketing, at a fairly cheap cost. If you go and see an unknown band perform in a club or bar, chances are they have a MySpace page and, they’ll be happy to tell you about it so you’ll tell other people too. The Internet can do more for a band who wants you to download songs from their CD than the typical music promotion model. It’s the word of mouth activity about an artist that spreads faster than anything.

Major artists rely heavily on marketing and distribution through their major record label to get their music out to the masses. If they are an established artist, their name and music can speak for itself. Independent musicians may have a harder time building a base if they just tour in their hometown or play the occasional state fair. The Internet has changed the way we listen to and buy music. If a band wants to be noticed beyond the zip code they reside in, on a shoestring budget, then they’ve got to use the Internet to get their music heard by as many people as possible, and build their ‘buzz’.

New social music sites such as JamBuzzer help artists not only build their buzz by helping them spread their music virally to potential fans all over the world, but also help fans find quality music that is becoming harder to find in the major industry roster of artists.

Many independent artists and bands are self-produced and self-funded, so they rely completely on their talent, and their knowledge of the Internet to be heard. The great thing about sitest like JamBuzzer and MySpace is that an artist can release individual singles or a few songs from their CD for you to listen to; and get feedback quickly as well as have the potential to build an army of fans who will tell others about their music. It is similar to the days when cassette singles were popular. If you liked the one song that was offered, you might go buy the rest of the album. The same strategy applies today with music downloads; give the potential fans a teaser, let them hear it for free so maybe they’ll like it and buy the whole collection. It’s a gamble that’s paying off for some artists, and the future of the music business could potentially be one where artists make more money by giving their songs away fro free than by the standard model. This new model however, will take strategic planning, and although it’s a risk, the potential reward is quite high.

In today’s digital music world, downloaded songs are a great indication to an artist that their music is popular. Some tracking tools can even show where the majority of their songs are being downloaded, as well as from what cities. This gives the artist a chance to possibly tour that area and promote their music live, and even sell merchandise. Newer bands that just don’t have the money to pay for a tour realize that the internet is the best vehicle they have to get their music heard locally as well as around the world.

Truly, music downloads have changed the way music is heard, so much that it is creating a stir to the ‘elephant in the room’ major record companies.. Many of the major labels are fighting the digital age because the old way of doing things allowed them more control over an artist.. Today’s up and coming artists have the ability to do what they want, on their own terms. Self-produced free agents of music are revolutionizing the way you hear about a new artist. Because the major labels are losing the creative control in the industry, the artists have more freedom to really express their talents without being ‘too risky’ for the labels. As a result, it’s possible that in the years to come, we will get better, true music, and there may even be a battle of the Internet bands with all of the new technologies that sites such as JamBuzzer are developing.

Apple's iTunes is now at 26% of all music sales, significantly more than any pysical music seller, and more than all other digital music download companies combined.

According to Billboard, iTunes’ share of all US music sales for 2009 was at 26%, up more than 5% from 2008. This gives it an even bigger lead over the number 2 seller, Walmart (iTunes knocked Walmart out of the top spot in 2008). Walmart’s sales are now at 12.5%, down from 15%. Walmart and Best Buy combined don’t add up to iTunes’ share.

One factor in this, obviously, is the shift away from physical formats like CDs. In 2009, all digital sales accounted for 50.7% of music sales (up from 42.5% in 2008). If the other music download companies don’t get a major share of new accounts, Apple will completely dominate the music industry like no one else ever has. In a few more years digital sales will be the sales that matter, and iTunes accounts for more of those than all other companies combined.

Prof. Dr. Fritz Sennheiser, founder of Sennheiser and one of the true pioneers of audio, died today at 98.

Prof. Dr. Fritz Sennheiser, founder of Sennheiser and one of the true pioneers of audio, died Monday at 98 years of age.

Late during the evening of 17 May 2010, only a few days after his 98th birthday, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Fritz Sennheiser, audio pioneer and founder of today’s Sennheiser electronic GmbH & Co. KG, passed away. The audio industry has lost a huge figure, not only in terms of his technical expertise but also in terms of his humanity.

Through his company Prof. Dr. Fritz Sennheiser had a crucial influence on the development of sound transmission technologies and was instrumental in forging many ground-breaking developments in electroacoustics and transmission technologies. Under his guidance the first shotgun microphones and open headphones were created and he oversaw important developments in wireless radio and infra-red transmission. It was completely natural for Fritz Sennheiser to give his developers the “creative and technical freedom” they required. His humanity also shone through when – considering the significant workload involved in running an expanding company – he took time to share his knowledge with students, inspiring them with an enthusiasm for audio technology. In 1982 he retired from the management of the company, handing over to his son, Prof. Dr. sc. techn. Jörg Sennheiser.

Fritz Sennheiser continued to take a vivid interest in the company he founded in summer 1945. His enthusiasm for audio technology, his creative curiosity, coupled with a modesty that is all too rare these days, his self-discipline, sincerity and generosity in his dealings with people, will remain an example to follow for all those who knew him.

The history of the European audio industry will forever remain inextricably linked with the name of Fritz Sennheiser.

The Sennheiser Group, with its headquarters in Wedemark near Hanover, Germany, is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of microphones, headphones and wireless transmission systems. The family-owned company, which was established in 1945, recorded sales of over €385 million in 2008. Sennheiser employs over 2,100 people worldwide, around 55% of whom are in Germany. Sennheiser has manufacturing plants in Germany, Ireland and the USA, and is represented worldwide by subsidiaries in France, Great Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark (Nordic), Russia, Hong Kong, India, Singapore, Japan, China, Canada, Mexico and the USA, as well as by long-term trading partners in many other countries. Also part of the Sennheiser Group are Georg Neumann GmbH, Berlin (studio microphones) and the joint venture Sennheiser Communications A/S (headsets for PCs, offices and call centres).
