1. Imma Be by The Black Eyed Peas – Moving up from last weeks number three is Imma Be. Really people? Why is a song that just repeats its title over and over as its main lyrics number one? Why not something with more thought put into it… Expand your minds!
2. TiK ToK by Ke$ha – Finally down from four weeks at number one, Ke$ha’s TiK ToK is still inspiring people to go out and get crazy!!
3. Bed Rock by Young Money Feat. Lloyd – Moving up on the charts, Bed Rock has taken number three. Not only can Young Money make your “bed rock” but apparently he can also make our charts rock.
4. Bad Romance by Lady Gaga – Unfortunately this audibly annoying song has moved up from our last weeks number five.
5. Need You Now by Lady Antebellum -  Following Lady Gaga is Lady A this week. Not only needing “you now” but needing to creep up to number one has become one of Lady A’s necessities.
6. We Are The World 25: For Haiti by Artists For Haiti – Sadly the ones who are trying to give others in need, a little hope have sunk down from last weeks number two spot…
7. Hey Soul Sister by Train – Although a catchy tune, Hey Soul Sister isn’t catchy enough to move up from its spot from last week.
8. How Low by Ludacris – Since he’s asking… How low can this song go? Fortunately for Luda, not very, How Low has maintained its position at number eight for 3 weeks so far.
9. In My Head by Jason Derulo – I have finally heard it! Its not too bad, but kinda slow and not quite my glass of beer. But apparently good enough to stay at number nine for another week.
10. Say Aah by Trey Songz Feat. Fabolous – What would make this song better is if it wasn’t so damn slow. It would be a good song about drinking and a good song to drink to if it had a little more of a faster tempo. But still good job making the number ten spot!

Boy Eats Drum Machine is singer, producer, visual artist, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Jon Ragel. Boy Eats Drum Machine is a special breed of multi-disciplined solo artist, enthusiastically interactive in his approach to his craft. Ragel prolifically chronicles his writing and recording process on his website. He takes the stage as Boy Eats Drum Machine with a saxophone, turntable, microphone, sampler and green tom drum. Ragel’s clear voice sails over his expert jams, often causing show-goers to dance, sway and otherwise become transfixed.

That he has been met with near-universal acclaim, called “grievously underrated” by the Washington Post, “fresh and unexpected” by NPR, and just plain “awesome” by Music For Robots, is only part of the story. Because right there at the merch booth after the show every night is Ragel, showing you the vintage LP covers he repurposes by hand-screening his own artwork on. If there were ever such a thing as a one-man musical army, a virtual volcano of creativity and seemingly endless musical excitement, Boy Eats Drum Machine is that army, that volcano.

Vampire Weekend are on top the world right now. Their sophomore album Contra debuted number 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart (Their self-titled debut peaked at number 17). And now, they bring us a video for “Giving Up The Gun” directed by the Malloys (Jonas Brothers, Weezer, N.E.R.D., White Stripes). The video boasts appearances by RZA, Joe Jonas, Lil Jon, and a drunk Jake Gyllenhaal.

This week we’re taking a look at two different covers of “White Riot”, originally by The Clash: The first by Dropkick Murphys, and the second by Audioslave. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the song, take note: After first listen, many people have thought the song advocates a race war. In fact, it is about class economics and race – lyricist Joe Strummer was trying to appeal to white youths to find a worthy cause to riot, as he felt blacks in the UK already had. Its message is exemplified in the lines “Are you taking over / Or are you taking orders? / Are you going backwards / Or are you going forwards?”

The Audioslave rendering is, in my opinion, actually better from a purely musical standpoint, even though I don’t like Chris Cornell’s vocals here. I like the Dropkick Murphys version a lot, and I think it’s much closer to the original – but in the end, what’s the point of doing a cover if you’re just going to do it the same? I’m giving this one to Audioslave – what do you think?

Although this probably goes without saying, I do just want to say I’d rather hear Joe Strummer on this any day.

The 2010 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival takes place June 10-13 in Manchester, Tennessee. Instead of releasing the lineup all at once, the Bonnaroo website and MySpace page are unveiling artists from noon to 9 p.m. Eastern time today.

Already confirmed: Jay-Z, Flaming Lips playing Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, Phoenix, Weezer, Neon Indian, LCD Soundsystem, Stevie Wonder, Kid Cudi, the Dead Weather, Kings of Leon, Damien Marley and Nas, Chromeo with Daryl Hall, GWAR, and Tokyo Police Club.

Lil Wayne was supposed to start his year-long prison term yesterday after pleading guilty to an attempted weapons possession in 2007. According to MTV News, Wayne’s sentence has been delayed has been delayed to March 2 because of a cracked tooth that requires dental surgery. Pitchfork recalled a Blender article from 2008 that goes into further detail of the rapper’s dental history.

Wayne’s dental troubles are pretty well documented. A Blender cover story from 2008 featured a scene in which Wayne is hit with a righteous toothache in the studio, causing him to freestyle: “I got a toothache/ The size o’ Virginia/ I got a tooothaaache/ And it hurts like a muh-fucka!” The article goes on to describe Wayne’s kitchen thusly: “There is no food in sight besides candy. The counter is crowded with Blow Pops, Sour Patch Kids, Snickers, Milky Ways, Dots, Skittles.” (And that grill can’t make flossing any easier.)

Toothaches or not, Lil Wayne still had enough strength to attend his going away party that was on February 7. Guests included everyone in Young Money, Wale, Trae, Sean Garrett, Chris Johnson and even former Hot Boys co-member B.G.

To stop earphones from tangling we simply need to tie the ear-buds and the jack together. We can do this by folding the wire in half to bring the back to the buds and then put a knot in the cable near to that end. Slip knots are good for this because they’re easy to undo but will stay in place long enough.

Phantogram

Phantogram’s music sounds like it’s made by a band from the city. Electronic loops, hip-hop beats, shoegaze, soul, pop — each finds its way into their songs. Unexpectedly, the band doesn’t live and work in a major urban center, but rather calls the town of Saratoga Springs, NY (population 26,186) home. Despite the cultural influence of local Skidmore College (where fellow beat-experimenters Ratatat formed) and a relatively small scene of adventurous musicians and listeners, Saratoga isn’t exactly teeming with fans of J. Dilla, My Bloody Valentine or Serge Gainsbourg.

But Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel, the duo that make up Phantogram, have flourished in Saratoga. In fact, the town itself isn’t rural enough for their taste — they drive almost every day another 45 minutes into upstate farmland to a barn they call Harmony Lodge to write and record. Serving as their homemade studio/practice space/think-tank/bat-cave, the barn is equipped with various samplers, tapes, records, synths, drums, and both percussive and stringed instruments, and it’s there that Phantogram allows their natural surroundings and metropolitan influences to meld together creating beautiful, beat-driven dreamlike pop songs.

Vinyl records have been making a fairly strong comeback lately, with well over 2 million sold in 2009. While that is still less than 1 percent, you have to do more than collect a few records nowadays to be the coolest hipster on the block. Fortunately, Gakken has come to the rescue with their Premium Gramaphone Kit.

A replica of gramophones used in the early 20th century, it supports all record sizes and even lets you record. The gramophone, once assembled, is powered by hand crank, and uses either a bamboo or metal needle – both included.
